French social security
Anyone wishing to settle in France needs to know how to subscribe for health insurance.
It is not always necessary to get a private insurance policy, and most foreign nationals established in France can subscribe to French social security, the « Protection universelle maladie » (Puma), on the basis of their professional activity or regular residence in France.
In some cases, foreign nationals will have their medical expenses covered by the health insurance system of their country of origin, through the application of European regulations or bilateral social security agreements. This applies in particular to EU citizens, seconded workers and pensioners. In this case, they will need to obtain a specific form in your country of origin (S1 in EU countries, SE-404 in the United States, etc.) and submit it to the French health insurance system (CPAM) once they have settled in France. In some cases, the process can be complex and may require the services of a specialist.
