Non-professional immigration
People wishing to settle in France may wish to do so for a wide variety of reasons, other than employment or business. Most of such reasons fall within the following categories:
- Settling in France for family reasons
You can obtain the right to settle in France on the basis of your family ties with a French national, an EU citizen or a foreign national living in France.
There are a number of different types of visa which may be suitable, depending on the nature of the family relationship. The person involved may be :
- Spouse of a French national
- Dependent ascendant of a French national or his spouse
- Parent of a dependent French child
- Dependent child of a French national
- Family member of a European citizen living in France
- Family member of a non-European foreign national living in France (regroupement familial, Passeport talent (famille), etc.)
- Studying or doing an internship in France
Each year, France welcomes several hundred thousand students to its universities, colleges and « grandes écoles« , some of which are ranked among the best in the world.
If you wish to study in France you will need to be accepted by a higher education institution.
In most cases, you will need to be monitored by Campus France, which will forward your application to the desired institution (via the « Etudes en France » platform) and check your aptitudes, particularly your language skills.
- Remote working from France
You can quite easily obtain the right to move to France for the purpose of working remotely for an employer based abroad.
If you are not benefiting from your physical presence in France for business purposes (meetings with clients, canvassing, etc.), obtaining a visa or a residence permit « visiteur » is relatively easy and does not require the issue of a work permit.
- Retire or take a gap year in France
Anyone can obtain a visa « visiteur » in France as long as they don’t plan on working there and prove that they have sufficient financial resources and a health insurance.
